The Uneasiness of Transitions
Let's face it; there are times when change can bring uneasiness to our lives, personally and professionally. Living in the unknown, not knowing what tomorrow will be like can be daunting, but if we shift our perspective, it can be freeing and even exciting.
Even though I had a permanent position in the corporate arena, Barton and I moved to North Carolina in 2005 because we would not have been able to sustain our family where we were. Barton spent many hours researching the best places that would provide what we needed, and when the opportunity arose overnight, we had to follow. Yet, I was distressed because leaving family and friends just after Katrina had devastated the southeast was difficult. In the end, it was the best decision we made and has provided us with incredible opportunities in our work and service to others.
When transitions bring anxiety, it is because we attach ourselves to what we are familiar with; the way things have always been done. Letting go of what we know can be terrifying.
In all of the anxiety surrounding our economy, there has been a trend where communities are banding together, finding creative ways to support each other's professional and personal lives. In addition, the focus has shifted to how we can become more involved in sustaining our local communities and providing services that support our community.
Living through change gives us an opportunity not only to grow personally, but also to create new opportunities, new ways to serve our community. There are many resources, services, or mentors that can walk with you on your own journey.
