Speaking the Truth

There are times when the truth must be spoken; it cannot stay hidden. For once the truth is spoken, there is now a call for action, and action changes ourselves, our relationships, our community.

Recently I have been teaching a workshop on finding our core authentic voices- what is it we want to say and how do we say it? What happens when we are distracted, thrown off course, unaware, opposed by someone with a different view?

On the ride from Pensacola to Atlanta, my father spoke his truth, "I would feel more comfortable if you were in a full time job with benefits." His truth was coming from a place of concern for his daughter and concern for the future. I sat quietly for a few moments, and then replied, "I know, but I'm so much happier now from where I was several years ago, and we'll be fine." I spoke my truth, and he listened. It was a moment full of compassion and respect.

There is a way of speaking the truth, what must be said, and letting go of the attachments of the outcome, the reactions of others, and the emotional investment that can tangle us up. In speaking the truth, in calling out a problem or situation, then awareness can take place and action can come forth.

For a long time, I had held onto what others thought of me, afraid to speak my truth because I wanted approval of those in authority. Plain and simple- I wanted to be liked. However, this provided much suffering, and in the end, I was benefiting no one.

Speaking and writing from the place where you are still, some call it the soul, others call it centered, whatever language you use doesn't matter; speaking and writing from this place can bring about incredible change in our community.

What you do need to say?
