When the Tool Breaks

When a tool breaks, stop what youÙre doing and fix the tool,” is a saying that my great grandfather would say. My question is, what if you canÙt? Stop. In December, when my computer melted down, it was devastating as a freelance writer.

My computer was whisked off for a diagnostic and came back not only empty of all information and programs, but in worse condition than it had left. The space bar was damaged and now takes true force of the finger to create spaces between words. The Internet still blinks in warning “No connection available.” The only reason to even keep it on the desk is the connection to the printer. At least the power button worked now.

So I have hunkered down with my husbandÙs old computer which is even worse shape. In order to pull out the CD carrier, I jam a knife just under the tray. I know, I'm just waiting for the shock waves to burst forth. While there is no printer connection, there is Internet connection. The Internet is such a valuable tool for businesses, that yesterday, when two countries lost Internet connection, thousands of businesses scrambled to find another way to conduct business.

Finally, I have given in and researched new Apple laptop models that are available. The thing is, deadlines are still due. The work has to get done. So at 11pm I am still wrangling between two half dead computers smashing the keys until they give in and type the letter I am looking for and copying files onto an information stick.

When I finally purchase the Mac, IÙll be so ecstatic, I wonÙt know what to type first!
